Pakistan’s Southern Province Ravaged By FloodsHundreds of villages in Pakistan’s main province of Punjab was ravaged by flood waters Wednesday. The flood destroyed homes, crops and has threatened lives of the people living in the province. Rescue workers warned that rivers would soon surge into the country’s south and will result into more evacuations.

Monsoon season of the current year has resulted in the worst flooding in Pakistan in history and has killed about 1,500 people already. The U.N. is trying its best to provide food and other necessities to some 3.2 million people affected by the flooding in a nation with a poor economy.

After floods ravaged the northwest province of Pakistan, it flooded villages and urban centers in Punjab, the wealthiest and most populous province. The military used boats and helicopters to evacuate affected villagers in the area to higher ground.

The level of water is so high in Kot Addu and Layyah in the southern province and that only treetops and uppermost floors of some of the buildings were visible.

30,000 people have been rescued already from the flooded zones in Kot Addu and nearby areas as told by the Military spokesman Maj. Gen. Nadir Zeb. He added that more flooding is expected as more rains were forecast in the following days. Nadir said that people must cooperate with them and that they must leave those areas where floods are expected to hit.

Pakistan’s Monsoon season is expected to last usually about three months. The country gets an average of 137 mm (5.4 inches) worth of rainfall during this season. The head of the National Weather Forecasting Center in Islamabad, Mahummad Hanif, said that 160 mm (6.3 inches) has already been received this year. He added that the rate has increase to about 25-30 percent above its normal. Pakistan’s northwest regions was hit the hardest. About 47 deaths had been killed in the region since the flooding began in late July.
