BP has already announced its claimed victory Wednesday in the company’s effort to permanently seal its blown-out well. The government reported that much of the spilled oil is already gone though there is still about five times the amount of oil from that which poured from the Exxon Valdez. It’s already been three months since the oil began gushing from the sea floor and officials are already offering cautious remarks indicating an end to one of the world’s worst oil spill incident. However, residents in the coast are still skeptical with the report.
BP PLC was able to achieve a significant milestone with its planned method of sealing the well when the mud that was poured down the well held the gushing of the crude. It signifies that their planned method appears to be a success. Crews are still faced on a decision to follow up by adding cement down the broken wellhead.
Retired Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen said that they were able to pretty much make the well not a threat but they still need to finish it from the bottom. Federal officials won’t declare it a complete victory unless mud and cement are also being pumped into the bottom of the well.
About a quarter of the total oil that spilled out from the well still remains in the Gulf as reported by scientists of the Interior Department and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The other three-quarter, estimated at 152 million gallons, has either been collected, cleaned up or chemically dispersed, deteriorated, evaporated or dissolved.
White House energy adviser Carol Browner said that the oil was captured, skimmed, burned, contained, and that Mother Nature did her part in clearing up the oil.
BP has said that the static kill they applied might be enough to seal the well for good. Allen said, that a relief well of 18,000 feet that has been drilling for the past three months will be used later to execute the bottom kill of the well were mud and cement will be ejected into the bedrock to finish the job. This task is becoming more urgent as hurricane season is coming.
