Iraqis Fear Renewed Violence As U.S. Troops Withdraw

Iraqis Fear Renewed Violence As U.S. Troops WithdrawU.S. President Barack Obama express its pledge to halt combat operations in Iraq by the end of this month. The decision made Iraqis fear that the withdrawal could mean a surge in violence.

Reports has shown that violence in Iraq has lowered down since the peak of the conflict in 2006-2007. However, bombings and skirmishes still occur daily and the civilian death toll rose in the past month.

Squabbling Politicians wasn’t able to  agree on a coalition government since the March 7 parliamentary election failed to conclude terms. Such inconclusive election has raised tensions in the past months opening the way for insurgents.

32 years old Samer Ahmed, a Baghdad laborer whose brother was killed by militants at the height of Iraq’s sectarian warfare in 2007, said  that the US withdrawal will pave the way for the militias and armed groups to work freely and start activating their operations again. He added that Iraq’s security situation will deteriorate severely and that civil war is coming to devour everything in Iraq.

Obama said in his speech to American veterans on Monday that, he was making good on a promise to end U.S. combat in Iraq by August 31, despite a potentially dangerous political impasse which promoted new fears of a renewed insurgency.

The planned withdrawal of U.S. troops will leave Iraq’s security in the hands of its own U.S.-trained army  and police. This raise concerns if the security forces are ready to protect a country that has been at war since Saddam Hussein was ousted from power through the 2003 U.S. led invasion.

A 21 year-old university student Baqer Sadeq said that Iraqi security forces are still unable to maintain the security in Iraq and that the U.S withdrawal will result in more violence and renewed sectarian fights.

U.S. commanders say that little change will take effect in the end of the month. There are American forces patrolling in a support role with Iraqi security units and the remaining force of 50,000 is enough to counter any violence.
