Crews Hoped To Seal The Well For Good

Crews Hoped To Seal The Well For GoodCrews were hoping to begin pumping mud or cement down the opening of the blown-out oil well at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday. BP officials said that the method they are planning to use might be the solution to finally put a halt to the spill.

Engineers has already planned to examine the broken blowout preventer with an oil-like liquid to be able to check its effectiveness in handling the static kill. If the test turns out to be successful, they will spend Tuesday through Thursday in pumping mud or cement down the oil well.

Thad Allen, a retired coast guard and the government’s point man on the spill response, said last Tuesday at a news briefing held in Houston that the troops are hoping to begin the testing soon and to be be able to finish it by noon. He added that it is a really positive step forward and it is going to be a good news in a time where there hasn’t been much good news but he suggested that a celebration is still too early.

The planned action is meant to ensure the crews who have spent months fighting the oil spill that they will be able to stop oil spill for good. The experimental cap which was put into place was able to prevent the oil from leaking further for more than two weeks but the cap was never meant to be a permanent fix.

BP officials had insisted, in the past months since the oil spill, that a pair of expensive relief wells are the only sure way to stop the oil leak. However, they said that the static kill alone might do the trick of sealing the well. BP Senior Vice President said that if the planned static kill will turn out to be successful, they will still continue to build the relief wells to confirm that the well is dead. He said that they wanted to end up with cement in the bottom of the hole. Government officials and company executives have long said that the expensive relief wells, which costs about $100 million each, might be the only way to make certain the oil is contained.
